Summary:

Responsibility for the regulations dealing with foods sold in San Marino, including GM foods, is shared by the Secretariat of State (Ministry) of the Territory, Environment and Agriculture, the Secretariat of State for Health and the Prevention Department through the Veterinary Health Unit. and Food Hygiene (UOSVIA). The Secretariat of State for Health is responsible for defining the standards and policies relating to the safety parameters and nutritional quality of food and feed and for the development of health and nutritional policies. The State Secretariat of Health through the Prevention Department is also responsible for defining all other issues relating to food and feed safety, the veterinary and phytosanitary sectors, including labeling policies and develops standards relating to packaging, labeling and advertising of food The Secretariat of State for the Territory, Environment and Agriculture deals with the regulation of seeds, fertilizers, feed for livestock and crops. UOSVIA manages all inspection and enforcement tasks. A GM food safety assessment has never been carried out in San Marino. The safety assessment activities of our country would refer to the EU / EFSA documents. My country has a mandatory and positive labeling regulation and allows voluntary and negative labeling on GM foods.
