TIC-AR233-5
Commodity: Potatoes
Traits: Potato virus Y resistance
Argentina
Name of product applicant: Tecnoplant S.A.
Summary of application:

The potato plants carrying the TIC-AR233-5 event were obtained by transformation mediated by A. tumefasciens, with a construct that contains the cp-PVY gene that codes for the capsid protein of the PVY virus, and confers on the plant tolerance to potato virus Y infection, without presenting symptoms or diminishing its yield. The mechanism of post-transcriptional silencing is responsible for the resistance in these plants. This explains the absence of expression of the PB-PVY protein.

Summary of the safety assessment (food safety):
• Molecular characterization studies show that the insert has remained stably in the genome of the plant throughout successive generations and in different environments and genetic environments. • New expression proteins are expressed at very low levels or are undetectable. • It is compositionally equivalent to its non-transgenic counterpart. • No evidence of similarity or homology was found with known toxic proteins. • There is no evidence of expression of known allergenic substances for the expressed proteins.

Country introduction:

In Argentina, the food and feed risk assessment process of transformation events, as the result of modern biotechnology, is carried out by the National Service for Agrifood Health and Quality (Senasa). The General Office of Biotechnology, is the area responsible for carrying out this task. It has an specific professional team and the advise of a Technical Advisory Committee composed of experts from several scientific disciplines representing different sectors involved in the production, industrialization, consumption, research and development of genetically modified organisms.

Stacked events:

Stacked events with all single events approved, are assessed as a new event, but with much less requirements, always on a case-by-case basis.
