Summary of the safety assessment (food safety):
1,590 / 5,000 Translation results Event CTC95019-5 was genetically modified to express the Cry1Ac protein, which confers resistance to Diatraea saccharalis, and the NptII protein, used as a selection marker. These proteins are identical to the proteins expressed by event CTC93209-4 and have an extensive history of safe use in several genetically modified events evaluated by regulatory agencies in several countries around the world (Annex A). Thus, event CTC95019-5 is yet another genetically modified sugarcane event developed by CTC to express a Cry1A class protein with the objective of controlling the sugarcane borer (Diatraea saccharalis). The main difference between this event and the other events developed by the CTC is the use of the genetic background of the CTC9005HP sugarcane variety. The CTC has already developed event CTB141175/01-A (genetic background of cultivar CTC20), event CTC91087-6 (genetic background of cultivar CTC9001) and event CTC93209-4 (genetic background of cultivar CTC9003) with the same control purpose. of the drill. The commercial event CTC20BT (CTB141175/01-A) expresses the Cry1Ab and NptII proteins and was commercially released by CTNBio on June 8, 2017 (Extract from Technical Opinion No. 5,483/2017). Event CTC91087-6 expresses Cry1Ac and PAT proteins (bar) and was commercially released by CTNBio on December 17, 2018 (Extract of Technical Opinion No. 6,234/2018). Therefore, event CTC95019-5 expresses proteins that have already been considered safe by CTNBio, more than once, when used in sugarcane cultivation.

Country introduction:

Brazil had the first biosafety law approved in 1995. After the identification of the need to improve the biosafety system of Brazilian genetically modified organisms, a new law was published. The Law 11.105 / 05 establishes a technical committee dedicated to the analysis of the safety aspects of genetically modified organisms and a council of ministers that is dedicated to the analysis of the socioeconomic aspects of the commercial release of genetically modified organisms. In this context, Brazil already has several commercial products that involve genetically modified organisms (plants, human and veterinary vaccines, microorganisms for fuel production) and products derived from new genetic modification techniques.

At the discretion of, and upon consultation with, CTNBio, a new analysis and issuance of technical opinion may be released on GMOs containing more than one event, combined through classic genetic improvement and which have been previously approved for commercial release by CTNBio
