Workshop for the development of a project “Sustainable ecosystem management for adaptation to climate change and livelihoods improvement in the Nile Basin

Background
This workshop was in follow-up to the FAO-organized workshop convened for the members of the Near East Forest and Range Commission and held in Cairo, Egypt in September 2011. At that workshop, Near East countries explored areas for regional cooperation related to climate change, forests/woodlands and rangelands and developed logical frameworks for four sub-regional projects (the Nile Basin countries, North Africa, Oriental Near East and the Gulf States, and non-Arabic speaking countries). Four concept notes based on these logical frameworks were drafted and presented at the Near East Forest and Range Commission (NERFC) session held in Antalya, Turkey in February 2012. The members of the NEFRC requested FAO to further develop the proposals and to seek financial support.
FAO Headquarters, the FAO Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa (RNE) and the Sub-regional Office for East Africa (SFE) jointly organized the meeting in Addis Ababa for the Nile Basin countries - Egypt, Ethiopia, Sudan and South Sudan - to further the development of the project "Sustainable Ecosystem Management for Adaptation to Climate Change and Livelihoods Improvement in the Nile Basin".
Participants
Twenty-three participants attended the meeting. These included representatives of the forestry sector, climate change sector, and the Operational Focal Point for the Global Environment Facility (GEF) from each of the four Nile Basin countries, as well as representatives from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the African Union Commission (AUC), the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel Initiative, and, on 11 December, from the European Union Delegation to the AUC.
Objectives
The objectives of the workshop were:
- to review/validate the log frame for the proposed Nile Basin project
- to elaborate details of the project document and identify how the project would support countries' policies and strategies and how it would relate to other initiatives under way in the countries, including the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and Sahel Initiative
- to discuss financing options to agree on the next steps and a timetable for the development of the project.
