FAO
The project, titled "Mobilisation and capacity building for small and medium scale enterprises involved in the production and commercialisation of non-wood forest products (NWFP) in Central Africa (GCP/RAF/408/EC)", is financed by the European Union for a period of four years (2007-2010). The project aims at increasing the revenues of rural populations by building entrepreneurial capacities and ensuring sustainable resource management within enabling institutional settings. The three-year project "Enhancing food security through non-wood forest products in Central Africa (GCP/RAF/398/GER)" was funded by the Government of Germany through its Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection and was implemented from July 2005 to September 2008. It contributed to facilitate actions by governments, non-governmental organizations and the private sector in six Central African countries. It aimed to enhance food security in the sub-region through the sustainable use of NWFP from moist dense forests and other tree-based systems. Please read more here.

Non-Wood Forest Products at FAO: Established in 1991 in the Forest Products Division (now the Forest Products and Industries Division), the programme "Promotion and Development of Non-wood Forest Products (NWFP)" is one of the priority areas of FAO's Forestry Department. Our mission is to improve the sustainable utilization of NWFP in order to contribute to the wise management of the world's forests, to conserve their biodiversity, and to improve income-generation and food security. The German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) provides funds for FAO projects on food security and finances two projects on non wood forest products and their contribution to food security in Central Africa (GCP/RAF/398/GER and GCP/RAF/441/GER). The Ministry advocates that the right to food should be given broad recognition to consolidate the rights-based approach in international efforts to fight hunger and malnutrition.
