Forestry Outloook Study for West and Central Asia (FOWECA)
The Forestry Outlook Study for West and Central Asia (FOWECA) is one among the series of regional forestry sector outlook studies initiated by FAO in collaboration with member countries to examine the direction of development of forests and forestry. The outlook study for West and Central Asia was endorsed by the FAO Near East Forestry Commission at its fifteen session held in Sudan in January 2002. The main report of the study was discussed and endorsed by the seventeenth session of the Near East Forestry Commission held at Larnaca, Cyprus in June 2006.
FOWECA covers the following 23 countries: Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Cyprus, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, and Yemen.
Objectives and approach
The primary objective of FOWECA is to provide a long-term perspective of the development of the forestry sector in the West and Central Asia region in the context of economic, social, institutional and technological changes.
Using 2020 as a reference year, FOWECA analyses the trends and driving forces that will shape the sector during the next two decades and identifies policies, programmes and investment options that can enhance the sector's contribution to sustainable development. FOWECA is designed to complement other forest-related strategic planning initiatives, including national forest programmes.
FOWECA has been implemented through the involvement of all key stakeholders. The consultative process has facilitated strengthening country capacity in strategic planning.
