Networking and information exchange

The entire process involved building up a strong network of national focal points, facilitated through a number of regional and sub-regional workshops. Periodic updates on the process helped to share information on the progress of various activities.

FOWECA workshops

Istanbul meeting (5 - 8 December 2005)

The FOWECA Regional Workshop was held in Istanbul, Turkey, from 5 to 8 December 2005. The Workshop was organized in collaboration with the Turkish Forest Administration and particularly with the support of the Turkish Association of Forest Engineers (TMMOB).

The Workshop aimed to review the first draft regional report and to ensure that all critical forest related issues were reflected in the report; and to discuss the priorities and strategies for the future development of forestry in the region.

Tbilisi meeting (6-9 June 2005)

The second sub regional FOWECA workshop for Central Asia and the Caucasus was held in Tbilisi, Georgia from 06 to 09 June 2005 at Hotel Sympatia. Seven FOWECA country focal points and/or their representatives from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan participated.

The objectives of the Workshop were to (i) share and discuss trends and issues in the forestry sector in the sub-region, (ii) identify and analyze major driving forces impacting on forests and forestry, (iii) improve understanding of scenario approach, and (iv) strengthen a network among the countries.

Damascus meeting (11-14 April 2005)

The workshop was held in Damascus, Syria from 11 to 14 April 2005. The focal points representing Cyprus, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen participated in the workshop. The Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) and the Arab Authority for Agricultural Investment and Development (AAAID) were represented by one participant each.

The main objectives of the workshop were to present and share among countries information based on the country outlook papers; and to further discuss and identify key issues and trends, main driving forces and possible future scenarios of the sector at the sub-regional level.

Beirut meeting (23 May 2004)

The FOWECA planning workshop was held on 23rd May 2004 in Beirut, in conjunction with the 16th Session of FAO Near East Forestry Commission (NEFC). FOWECA focal points from Afghanistan, Cyprus, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Yemen, participated in the workshop.

The main objectives of the workshop were to introduce to the focal points the process and activities of FOWECA study, to discuss the structure and the preparation of the country outlook paper, and to identify the thematic outlook study topics and issues. Budapest meeting (27-30 September 2004)

Central Asia and Caucasus countries attended the planning workshop that was held in Budapest from 27 to 30 September 2004, at the FAO Sub Regional Office for Central and Eastern Europe. The FOWECA focal points from eight countries participated in this planning workshop. These were focal points from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
