Enhanced stakeholder participation in national forest programmes

Background

FAO provides technical support to government forest institutions and other stakeholders to enable them to effectively translate national forest programme principles into practice. Capacity building on enhanced stakeholder participation in nfps is a vital part of this initiative. It responds to the core nfp principles including those related to ‘participation and partnership’ and ‘consistency within and integration beyond the forest sector’.

Recognising that many countries are already practicing the key principles of nfps, the trainings are designed to build on existing skills and experiences, enabling reflection over existing practice, as well as introducing new skills and methods that have proved effective in other countries.

Supporting materials

To complement the trainings, a guidance material Enhancing stakeholder participation in national forest programmes – tools for practitioners (FAO, 2009) has been developed to guide participants during and after the training. In addition a training package has been created, which includes a training manual Enhancing stakeholder participation in national forest programmes – A trainer’s manual (FAO, 2010) and accompanying CD particularly designed for trainers who facilitate participatory processes.
