FAO/UNECE statistical support for Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Caucasus
FAO and UNECE co-organized a regional workshop on forest products statistics in Ankara, Turkey, 27-28 May 2014. The workshop focused on improving and enhancing statistical capacity of national statistical correspondents from eleven countries in Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia. The workshop was hosted by FAO Subregional Office for Central Asia.
The workshop provided a platform bringing national and international experts together to share their experiences and discuss constraints in compilation of reliable data about production, consumption and trade in forest products. About 15 experts from eleven countries and FAO and UNECE participated in the workshop. Country participants were statistical officials on forest products statistics from national agencies of statistics and national forestry institutions of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Republic of Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
During the two-day workshop participants shared their experiences on data collection, validation and dissemination. FAO and UNECE presented their work on global international reporting on forest products statistics through the Joint Forest Sector Questionnaire. The questionnaire has been collected and shared among four collaborating agencies (Eurostat, FAO, ITTO and UNECE) since 1998. An expert from Estonia shared his experience about how reporting on forest products statistics is organized in his country.
The workshop was successful in improving communication, better understanding and cooperation between national forest products statistics providers and international organizations. Proceedings of the workshop will be published later this year.
