Green Cities Initiative Special Event
Multifunctional green infrastructures, a solution to urban challenges
FRIDAY 26 JULY 2024
11.00–12.30 CEST
PLENARY HALL
Overview
With two-thirds of the global population expected to reside in cities by 2050, addressing climate challenges and social inequalities in urban communities has become increasingly urgent. Local governments and civil society recognize the importance of multifunctional green infrastructure for its economic, environmental, and social benefits. In response, they are seeking support from the FAO to bridge the gap between municipal technical capacity and local urban needs.
The FAO Green Cities Initiative (GCI) launched in 2020 by FAO's Director General is an innovative effort to help cities reimagine their urban landscapes and transform the approach to urban life. This initiative aims to create tangible improvements in the living environment and well-being of all inhabitants by converting concrete urban jungles into green and vibrant spaces for living, working, and recreation. The goal is to engage 1,000 cities by 2030, mainstreaming the concept of "green cities as the new normal" and ensuring that all residents enjoy a green and healthy environment, with access to nutritious diets from sustainable agri-food systems.
Objectives
- Highlight how vertical, horizontal, and cross-sectoral collaboration can break down institutional silos and lead to innovative solutions for reimagining urban landscapes. The focus will be on how FAO, national ministries, municipal governments, and city departments can work together with other stakeholders to improve urban resilience and the health and well-being of urban dwellers.
- Present concrete examples of successful multifunctional green infrastructure projects and innovative technical, governance and financial models that have emerged from collaborative efforts.
- Recognize and celebrate efforts by awarding a Green City Award. Encourage cities to join the GCI network and become part of this transformative initiative.
