G77 & China Plenary meeting highlights, 19 July 2024: Innovation, COFO 27, 52 CFS

The G77 & China Plenary meeting, chaired by Mr. Khalid Mehboob, was held on 19 July 2024, at the FAO Red Room. Mr. Vincent Martin, Director of the FAO Office of Innovation (OIN), discussed the ongoing  efforts to support countries in the context of the FAO Science and Innovation Strategy, highlighting innovation as a key accelerator of the Four betters and an enabler of all the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A week ahead of the 27th Committee on Forestry (COFO), the Chairperson, Mr. Günter Walkner, accompanied by the FAO Forestry Division Director (NFO), Mr. Zhimi Wu,  and  COFO Secretary, Ms. Margo Buszko-Briggs provided updates on coordination efforts and events for the 9th World Forest Week. This year’s theme is “ Accelerating Forest Solutions through Innovation”.

The Committee on World Food Security (CFS) Chairperson, Ambassador Nosipho Nausca-Jean Jezile  and the CFS Secretariat provided an overview of preparations for the 52 CFS Session, to take place from 21-25 October 2024 in Rome, Italy, and invited members to engage.

The Vice-Chairperson, Mr. Tomás Alberto Duncan Jurado, briefed the group on internal matters. The departure of Ambassador Carlos Cherniak (Argentina), former G77 & China Chairperson (2021) was recalled, with members expressing gratitude for his contributions to the Group. The meeting concluded with a call for sustained unity among the Group, upholding its commitment to promote the interests of the developing nations.
