GACSA & CSA @COP23

For the third time, GACSA will participate in the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. COP 23 will take place from 6 to 17 November at the World Conference Center Bonn, which is located in Bonn, Germany, the seat of the Climate Change Secretariat. The conference will be convened under the Presidency of Fiji.

GACSA members will be among leaders from around the world to discuss one of the most pressing issues of our time, climate change. Over 20 000 participants are expected to attend COP 23 in Bonn and GACSA and its members are organising the following events:

07 November

''Building capacity of tackling regional climate and sustainable challenges'' Organized by National Council for Climate Change, Sustainable Development and Public Leadership (NCCSD) GACSA Speaking Slot

Venue: Meeting Room 10, Bonn zone - Time: 13:15 - 14:45 

This event highlights comprehensive and multi-stakeholder approaches to address various implementation dimension for climate action. It will look at opportunities for some key elements to scale up the ambition with best practices, risks and lessons learned toward a sustainable future.

08 November

''Soil carbon stocks and climate change: Reducing uncertainties to assess land management impacts'' Organized by CIRAD, Cornell University, GRA, INRA, IRD  GACSA Speaking Slot

Venue: Meeting Room 9 (100) - Time: 16:45 - 18:15

09 November

''Youth Engagement in Climate Smart Agriculture: Opportunities and Challenge'' Organized by the Climate Smart Agriculture Youth Network (CSAYN) - GACSA Speaking Slot

Venue: Meeting Room 2, Bonn zone - Time: 11:30 - 13:00 

This side event will showcase the collective action of a global youth network (CSAYN) and partners to make the links between climate change and agriculture more clear. The side event also seeks to:

  • Highlight the potential role of youth in climate-smart agriculture and share with youth participants the existing opportunities within the agricultural value chains;
  • Share experiences including challenges and opportunities of young farmers and success stories of CSAYN Global Coordination Unit (GCU) about youth in climate-smart agriculture with the wider participants;
  • Share with youth participants the potential role of agriculture in contributing towards the attainment of the adaptation and mitigation targets in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of developing countries.

10 November: Agriculture Action Day

  • CSA event: ''Launch of the climate-smart agriculture sourcebook'' (FAO) Organized by FAO

Venue: Bonn zone - Time: 14:00 - 15:00

  • ''Scaling Up Climate-Smart Agriculture to Achieve the Nationally Determined Contributions in the Agriculture Sectors'' Organized  by FAO - GACSA Speaking Slot

Venue: TBC -  Time 15:00 - 16:30 

The purpose of this event is to highlight the importance of, and opportunities offered by existing approaches to scale up CSA, relying on synergies between Parties and non-Party stakeholders, to support countries in achieving their NDC targets in the agricultural sectors. The objective is to showcase approaches and available know-how to scale up CSA, to highlight success stories, and to discuss current progress and challenges pertaining to scaling up, including related CSA metrics, with a specific emphasis on synergies between Parties and non-Party stakeholders.

12 November

“Catalyzing action towards climate-smarter agriculture and food systems for improved food security and nutrition. How GACSA is driving change. Organized by Government of the Netherlands - GACSA Side Event

Venue: Forum Internationale Wissenschaft - Time: 11:00 - 13:00 

Objective of this event is to share experiences of different GACSA members using CSA approach to facilitate and support implementation of NDCs and SDGs. In particular:

  • Tell GACSA's story and celebrate its successes and potential amongst key high-level stakeholder
  • Showcase GACSA's added-value achievements and roles through the Action Groups and Regional Engagement Task Team
  • Renew high-level interest and commitment from GACSA members and partners, with a view to mobilizing additional contributions

13 November

''Climate finance for climate smart food systems: Delivering the Paris Agreement'' Organized by IFAD

Venue: Meeting Room 12 - Time: 18:30 - 20:00 

This Davos style debate will analyse how annual climate finance flows can be used to unlock the much larger sums of public and private investment needed to deliver the ambitious goals of the Paris Agreement. The event will emphasize the central role of climate smart land use in making this happen.

14 November

''Fostering agriculture in NDC: challenges and opportunity for Africa'' Organized by Italian Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea (IMELS) and FAO

Venue: EU Pavilion  - Time: 11:15 - 12:45
