Dr. Andrew Achuo ENOW

Dr. Enow is an agronomist by profession, and has worked for many years as researcher in agriculture and as a manager of research and science programmes.
He recently served as Executive Director / Chief of Staff in the Office of the Vice Chancellor at the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (July – November 2014) where he provided strategic leadership of the staff of the Vice Chancellor’s office. He was previously employed at the National Research Foundation (NRF) in South Africa as Director, Knowledge Fields Development, (December 2011 - July 2014). In this portfolio he was primarily responsible for coordinating and managing the implementation of the Global Change Research Plan for South Africa. He also directed and managed other global Change related research programmes funded by the NRF; including engagements in international research collaboration such as the Belmont Forum initiative. In this capacity he doubled as co-Secretary of Belmont Forum (2012 – 2014). His international career started with his employment at the International Council for Science - Regional Office for Africa (ICSU ROA) as Programme Specialist for Biological Sciences (2006 - 2011). In this role he coordinated the production and implementation of the ICSU ROA Science plans and other publications, and managed many stakeholder engagement activities both within Africa and internationally.
Dr Enow’s research career started with his employment as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Agricultural Research for Development (IRAD) Cameroon in 1991. He grew in his research career to the grade of Research Scientist (Chargé de Recherche) before moving into research management. His areas of research interest were initially in soil fertility and land evaluation, and later drifted into soil microbial ecology and biological control of soil-borne plant pests and pathogens, and ultimately into plant pathology and plant-microbe interactions. His scientific output includes publications in international scientific journals, book editing, technical reports and training of students (from Cameroon and Belgium) on field research.


Dr Enow obtained a professional degree in agriculture (Ingénieur Agronome) with specialisation in soil fertility from the National Advanced School of Agriculture (ENSA), Dschang University Centre, Cameroon in 1988; a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Soil Science with specialisation in soil microbial ecology from Ghent University, Belgium in 1993; and a Doctorate degree (Ph.D.) in Applied Biological Sciences - Agricultural sciences with specialisation in plant pathology from Ghent University, Belgium in 2005.
Dr Enow has organized many International scientific and multi-stakeholder conferences and workshops on various subjects, and has delivered technical papers and invited lectures at several others. He has also participated in policy dialogues at national and international platforms, including the African Ministerial Council on Science and Technology (AMCOST), the Food Agricultural and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN), etc. He has also served on several national and international boards and committees.
