River of milk - Afghan dairy farmers prosper

The dairy sector in Afghanistan is thriving. Thousands of small farmers are benefiting from an FAO project that is improving the collection, processing and marketing of their milk. Women control almost 90 percent of the profits. Milk producers are organized into cooperatives and their representatives vote on management issues. Everyone shares in the profits and plans future growth. Demand for milk products is growing and the dairy industry in Afghanistan is expected to continue to thrive, channeling money back into some of the country's poorest villages.
