Transforming Cooperatives and Farmers' Lives - Viet Nam

“I've been a farmer all my life. Farming is all I really know.”

Nguyen Thi Hoi is a woman farmer in the province of Thai Binh, Viet Nam. She is one of many smallholder farmers whose lives have improved thanks to a project implemented by FAO and IPSARD (the Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development). Through the local farmers' cooperative, the Agricultural Service Cooperative (ASC), the project provided training on improved cultivation and farming techniques, and helped ASC organize for better access to markets and pricing.

“If we hadn't joined the Cooperative and this project,” reflects Hoi, “we would have remained a small business, and would have just been making enough food to eat.”

“We would not be as well off as we are now.”
