Women Farmers and Andean Seeds: Shaping Futures in Peru

“We are all women working here,” explains Vilma Choquecota Choquecota, of the Pomata District in Peru. “It hasn't always been easy. It has been a bit difficult to convince people, including our husbands, that we could approach organizations, because we are all women. But we have shown we can do it. We have worked, we have learned, and we have done this for our children.”

In recent years, FAO has been helping family farmers like Vilma across communities in Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador to build on their existing seed systems and to develop ways to boost the productivity of traditional farming methods. This work is also seen as key to strengthening regional resources. It plays a pivotal role in national food security and nutrition.
