Local Heroes: Non-conventional food plants to improve biodiversity and nutrition in Ecuador

Humankind is facing the combined consequences of climate change, biodiversity loss, and multiple forms of malnutrition. Even though we rarely get to know them, there are many stories of unsung heroes facing these challenges in their communities. This video is part of a broader collaboration with youth from around the world, preparing their own video stories about local heroes fighting climate change, biodiversity loss and malnutrition. In this video, Nina Duarte presents the initiative, Plantas Alimenticias No Convencionales (PANC) Ecuador, through which neglected and underutilized species can be recovered and protected to preserve biodiversity, promote food security and sovereignty and potentially improve the diet of people living in the Chocó Andino forest. This initiative is supported by Fundación Imaymana in Intillacta Reserve. Learn more about the nexus between climate change, biodiversity and nutrition: https://doi.org/10.4060/cb6701en
