FAO in Geneva joins local efforts to promote sustainable food and consumption in Switzerland.

21/08/2022

The City of Geneva, in collaboration with its partners, has been active for many years in the promotion of sustainable food production, in particular through its "Nourrir la ville" (Feeding the city) programme set up by the Agenda 21 - Sustainable City Service. The programme aims to promote local products, encourage the transition towards more sustainable diets and to develop urban agriculture. Several activities and events take place during the year in the city to promote these goals; two of which are the Festi’Terroir and The Month of Taste.

With over 80 exhibitors, and more than 15 000 participants, Festi’Terroir 2022 is a major annual gathering bringing together local producers and food processors, associations, and organizations engaged in the transformation towards more sustainable agrifood systems in Geneva. In its fourth edition, Festi’Terroir has become a driving force to sensitize the public and forge strong and solid links between Geneva's consumers and producers, boosting local sustainable consumption and contributing to the city's Climate Strategy.

The fourth edition of Festi’Terroir was an important opportunity for FAO in Geneva to reach out to the local public, raising awareness of FAO’s vision and activities, in particular of the necessary transformation towards more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems.

Several topics were covered by a proactive FAO team. From the overall key challenges and opportunities arising from the transformation of agrifood systems to food loss and waste, the importance of sustainable agriculture and accessibility to quality food as well other related themes such as climate change, science and innovation, agroecology, nutrition and healthy diets, local production and distribution, sustainable food packaging, among others.

Festi'Terroir 2022 is organised by the City of Geneva, Genève Terroir and Bio Genève, with the support of Bio Suisse and the State of Geneva (Department of Economy and Employment and Department of Territory) and with the media partnerships of Radio Lac and Terre&Nature.

World Food Day 2022

FAO engages with the City of Geneva and other local partners on several initiatives throughout the year. Coming up in October, we will celebrate World Food Day 2022 on the theme “Leaving no one behind” together with the City of Geneva, Partage - the Geneva food Bank, Ma-Terre, and the Federal Office for Agriculture of Switzerland. Activities will include a two day exhibition on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 October at Geneva Cornavin central train station. Save the date for this activity marking the birthday of FAO with a call for solidarity and the transformation of agrifood systems. More details will be soon available on the FAO in Geneva website.
