Austria and FAO support rural and agricultural development in Georgia

25/03/2020

FAO and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia are implementing pilot projects in Shida Kartli and Racha-Lechkhumi/Kvemo Svaneti to support rural and agricultural development in Georgia.  The project is supported by the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC).

The project’s goals are to enhance the competitiveness of the agricultural sector, increase food production and reduce poverty in rural areas.

The first steps already taken include establishing Local Initiative Groups (LIGs) in the communities of Ateni, Phlevi, Tvishi and Sori. Members of the local population who have become members of the LIGs will discuss and initiate a plan of future development activities within their communities.

The project aims to support local farmers in different directions and to enhance the capacities of specialists of the state extension services. One of the items in the project’s agenda is the arrangement of four demonstration plots, one in each selected pilot municipality in the above two regions. This will give local farmers an opportunity to observe demo plots using the best agricultural practices and expertise provided by FAO. The project will introduce and promote environment-friendly agricultural practices that reduce the risks and impact of climate change and ensure the formation of sustainable ecosystems. The farmers will get acquainted with practical and innovative production methods which can increase their income and reduce expenses. Fruits and vegetables to be grown at the demonstration plots will be selected according to the priority varieties of the local agricultural practices.

Theoretical as well as practical classes, study tours and trainings will be arranged at the demo plots. The content and topics of learning will be defined according to the local farmers’ and producers’ needs and interests. The project also envisions training of Farmers’ Information-Consulting Center specialists who will continue to consult farmers and producers after the project’s closure.

Besides the abovementioned activities, the project will offer grant opportunities to the inhabitants of Ateni, Phlevi, Tvishi and Sori. Grants will be provided for the agricultural production as well as infrastructural and social initiatives. Small grant investments will support the local population in strengthening production as well as improving their living conditions.

The pilot activities of the project and the lessons learnt will be considered in further policymaking by the Government of Georgia and will contribute to implementation of the National Strategy of Rural and Agricultural Development.
