04/11/2016

The Scientific-Research Center of the Ministry of Agriculture (SRCA) in collaboration with FAO carries out measures necessary to improve seed and planting material certification system in Georgia.

Specialists in Seed and Planting Material Standard and Certification Service conduct field inspections of seed plots (wheat, barley, corn, sunflower, and soybean) on farms engaged in the seed-growing sector and presents certificates of varietal quality to seed producers based on the laboratory test results of seed materials.
Specialists of the Scientific and Research Center Joint carry out field inspections on the plots of the seed-producing farmers continuously across Georgia. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the use of certified seeds and planting materials of international standards fulfills an obligation to the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area Agreement (DCFTA), which aims to facilitate the improvement of the quality of Georgian products and promote exports to European markets.

Earlier this year, FAO equipped a new SRCA laboratory in village of Tsilkani with all the necessary equipment for seed quality control. The new seed samplers, microscope, germination cabinet, safety cabinet and other laboratory equipment allow experts to conduct seed quality testing in line with international standards. The project is funded by Austrian Development Agency.
