Farm registry pilot project in Racha Region

12/10/2015

Up to 300 Georgian farmers have been registered in the computer-based software programme within the framework of a pilot farm registry system.

Representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia together with FAO Georgia experts spent one month in Racha region (Ambrolauri district) collecting and archiving information about the local farmers' property.

Findings were uploaded to the software by The National Wine Agency, used for registering vineyards in Georgia. The data obtained in Racha included information on arable land, perennials, pastures, meadows, machinery and farmers' livestock.

Researchers applied several research methods to collect the data, including in-person interviews with the farmers, registering all their agricultural belongings and outlining their cultivated land contours on the orthophotos (aerial photos), which gave more precise visual information about the private property of the farmers.

The experience obtained from the pilot farm registry in Racha region, will be applied to the full-scale implementation of the Farm Registry System in whole Georgia. The project aims to develop the capacity of the Ministry of Agriculture, with the support of FAO, in creating the accurate database of Georgian agriculture.
