Strengthening collaboration on earth observation technology for sustainable management of land and water resources

03/11/2022 - 03/11/2022

The FAO geospatial unit collaborates with GMES & Africa (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security and Africa) in the development and implementation process of earth observation (EO) based services to support sustainable development in Africa. On 3 November 2022, the geospatial unit participated in the exchange workshop on land degradation monitoring using MISLAND (Monitoring Integrated Services for LANd Degradation) platform organized by the OSS (Sahara and Sahel Observatory) North Africa Consortium. The MISLAND platform is a Decision Support System (DSS) utilizing earth observation data to deliver information, promote awareness and aid in decision making toward realizing Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN). This platform has been developed in the first phase for North-Africa and will be extended to cover the African continent in the second phase of GMES & Africa. In the workshop, the MISLAND platform was presented highlighting its functionalities for monitoring land degradation, vegetation, forest, erosion, and desertification. Technical feedbacks were provided in extending the platform to African continent.
