Geospatial information for sustainable food systems

Preparing, assessing, and using land cover & land use information

11/11/2021 - 11/11/2021

This webinar will present the importance of land cover & land use information, classification systems in UN  agencies and major multilateral environmental agreements. It will cover the development of the Food and  Agriculture Organisation's (FAO) Land Cover Legend Registry (LCLR) based on international standards in the  context of preparing and assessing standardised land cover & land use information to support sustainable  development goals and monitor natural resources.

As a part of this effort, FAO developed LCLR which is an open-source web catalogue. It is based on updated land  cover legend information, their classes, land cover datasets and reference documents based on the Land Cover  Meta Language ( LCML) at national, regional, and global level. Using examples from various in-country, the webinar  will present how Land Cover Classification System (LCCS)/LCML and LCLR data are used to support national  sustainable development frameworks.

This event is organised by ECaS in collaboration with FAO. ECas is the  Environmental Change and Sustainability (ECaS) research group at Southampton University.
