National Consultative Workshop on the Soil-Land-Water Digital Information System (SoLaWISe) in Mozambique
The National Consultative Workshop on the Soil-Land-Water Digital Information System (SoLaWISe) project was conducted in Maputo by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations from November 21st to 22nd, 2023. Mozambique serves as a pilot country for the SoLaWISe initiative, aiming to bolster crop yields sustainably while mitigating the impact on soil, land, and water resources amidst the challenges posed by climate change. SoLaWISe provides digital solutions for managing soil, land, and water. In its initial phase, suitability maps were generated for eight priority crops - maize, rice, sesame, tomato, cotton, potato, cashew nut, and soybean - to evaluate potential production and yield gaps, considering future climate scenarios.
The workshop's objectives encompassed introducing the SoLaWISe initiative. Participants were acquainted with the methodology and data requisites - such as land cover, soil information, crop needs, and crop calendar - for generating land suitability maps. Engaging discussions were held on preliminary findings during the workshop.
