Consultation on Global Agro-Ecological Zoning Platform functions and Applications

A consultation on "Global Agro-Ecological Zoning (GAEZ) Platform and Applications" was organized on September 19th 2022. It aimed at providing to GAEZ users a demonstration of functions and tools of the GAEZ v4 Data Portal and discuss options and user expectations for future GAEZ development. The event was organized by the Geospatial Unit of the Land and Water Division (NSL) of FAO in collaboration with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), the Environmental System Research Institute (ESRI) and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). The event was attended by 60 participants from different sectors such as private and public land use planners and extension services, researchers on land-water-food-environment nexus, climate change impacts and adaptation analysts, GIS and Remote Sensing experts from academia, national and international organizations. During the event, the panelists presented examples of agro-ecological zoning in Latin America and in China, new applications and tools recently developed on the Data Portal, such as country and global crop profiles. The roundtable discussion focused on GAEZ user needs, functions, data accessibility, global and national applications and future development. Participants highlighted the need to strengthen capacities in the use of the platform and data preparation. Soon, FAO, AIT and ESRI will provide new trainings on PyAEZ (a python package for Agro-Ecological Zoning), the GAEZ platform and Agro-Ecological Zoning in general.
