ABSTRACT
The intersessional meeting of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Aquaculture (CAQ) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) was held at FAO headquarters from 12–13 July 2023 and was proceeded by the fourteenth session of the Information System for the Promotion of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean (SIPAM). During the session, the Committee reviewed work carried out during the 2022–2023 period, including within the framework of the GFCM 2030 Strategy for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea (GFCM 2030 Strategy), and provided recommendations on priorities in the field of aquaculture management and research. In particular, in line with Target 3 of the GFCM 2030 Strategy, the Committee formulated advice on: i) governance in support of responsible investment; ii) the sustainability of the aquaculture sector; iii) the perception of aquaculture in the region; and iv) technology and information systems. In relation to its recent restructuring, as agreed by the Commission, the Committee outlined the roles and responsibilities of five of the newly formed technical advisory groups. Finally, the Committee agreed upon its work plan for 2023–2024.
