EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Regional meeting on the analysis of value chains for select Mediterranean and Black Sea marine aquaculture products was held on 7 November 2019 in Oran, Algeria, as a side event of the International Fair for Fisheries and Aquaculture (SIPA 2019). It was organized by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and was attended by 37 participants from 10 countries. The main objective was to provide a broad overview and develop understanding of the market of the Mediterranean and Black Sea aquaculture sector through the analysis of national aquaculture value chain case studies and price dynamics. Additional objectives of the meeting were to conduct a general analysis of the Mediterranean and Black Sea markets for the selected aquaculture products and to identify aquaculture production costs. Through presentations and discussion, the meeting recognized the importance of value chain development in providing a framework through which challenges to Mediterranean and Black Sea marine aquaculture can be systematically identified and addressed. It was acknowledged that production costs for the same farmed species can differ substantially between countries, due to varying degrees of development in the aquaculture sector and the structure of the industry. Participants also agreed that the shellfish farming sector in the Mediterranean region is mostly composed of smallscale producers with weak bargaining power along the value chain, and that harmonised and sound market data, as well as data sharing and transmission, could help the sector with regular market assessments and production forecasts, building towards a market-oriented aquaculture. The outcomes of the meeting will contribute to laying the ground for the CAQ technical meeting on aquaculture market data collection, common approaches and procedures, scheduled to be held in 2021 in Tunisia.
