EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The workshop on the development of principles for responsible investment in aquaculture was organized by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) within the framework the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) on Governance and Responsible Investment in Aquaculture. It was open only to the TAG Focal Points that had successfully completed a specially designed online learning programme, as well as to a small number of selected FAO experts. The workshop aimed to conclude a series of actions and activities conducted over the past four years by the GFCM towards the final proposal of principles for responsible investment in aquaculture in the Mediterranean and Black Sea, in support of Target 3 of the GFCM 2030 Strategy for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The aim of the workshop was for participants to review and comment on the zero draft version of the principles for responsible investment in aquaculture in the Mediterranean and Black Sea, which had been circulated to them prior to the workshop. During the workshop and following a series of relevant presentations and discussions, participants actively engaged in the review process and agreed on the structure and contents of the document to be submitted to the thirteenth session of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Aquaculture for subsequent review, refinement and approval.
