Report of the Aquaculture Demonstrative Centre online demonstrative training on finfish pathology

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Aquaculture Demonstrative Centre (ADC) training was held online from 5 April to 13 April 2021. It was organized by the GFCM in collaboration with experts from the Central Fisheries Research Institute (SUMAE) in Trabzon, Tukey. Over 100 participants from 28 countries were in attendance. The purpose of this seven-day online training was to share the latest progress made on animal health management in finfish aquaculture and to build capacity in controlling and preventing diseases. The training was opened by an aquaculture expert from the GFCM who explained the timeline of the ADC, as well as the objectives of the training on finfish pathology. Guest speakers then presented the current status of aquaculture and finfish aquaculture and provided an overview of fish diseases and their impacts on the sectors. Throughout the online training, speakers presented different types of fish diseases namely, non-infectious, bacterial, viral and parasitic along with potential treatment methods. Many of the presentations were also supported with videos. An introduction to molecular tools, including polymerase chain reactions, and cell culture preparation was also given.
