FOOD SECURITY SNAPSHOT

  1. Crop production in 2024 continued to be affected by conflict

  2. Prices of locally produced maize and imported rice at high levels yearonyear

Over 3 million people estimated to be severely food insecure in 2024

Crop production in 2024 continued to be affected by conflict

In the unimodal rainfall northern areas, harvesting of the 2024 millet and sorghum crops was completed in November 2024. In Far North Region, exceptional floods during the 2024 campain devastated over 85 000 hectares of agricultural land, swept away more than a total of 5 278 livestock and submerged vital fodder areas, causing extensive losses in rural communities (450 000 people). In central and southern areas, the 2024 secondary season maize crop was planted in October 2024 under favourable weather conditions, of which the harvest started in January 2025. Persistent insecurity and conflict in Far North, Northwest and Southwest regions continued to affect agricultural activities, limiting farmers’ access to inputs and fields, with a negative impact on the 2024 crop production.

Prices of locally produced maize and imported rice at high levels yearonyear

According to the National Statistics Institute (INS), the inflation rate in 2024 was at 7.6 percent, mainly driven by increases in prices of food. After increasing between March and June 2024, prices of locally produced maize decreased until September 2024, before rising again by 15 percent between October and December 2024. Similarly, prices of imported rice remained at high levels year‑on‑year.

Over 3 million people estimated to be severely food insecure in 2024

According to the latest Cadre Harmonisé (CH) analysis conducted in October 2024, over 3 million people (11 percent of the total population) were estimated to be facing severe acute food insecurity (CH Phase 3 [Crisis] or above) between October and December 2024. This is primarily due to persistent armed violence in Far North, Northwest and Southwest regions as well as to flooding in Far North, which caused large population displacement.
