Cameroon takes measures to stabilize food prices

On 20 March, the Government agreed to set the retail prices of food staples, fish and rice, after the recent surges. The price of mackerel, which had reportedly reached a peak of XAF 2 000 (USD 3.44) per kg, was lowered to XAF 1000 (USD 1.72) per kg and XAF 1 250 (USD 2.15) per kg in Douala and Yaoundé markets, respectively. Similarly, prices of the most consumed 25 percent broken rice, which was trading at around XAF 400 (USD 0.69) per kg, was set at XAF 330 (USD 0.57) per kg and XAF 350 (0.60) per kg in the two above-mentioned cities, respectively. Prices of higher quality 5 percent broken rice were also revised. According to latest available information, food prices increased sharply already late last year, with the year-on-year food inflation rate reaching an all-time high of 3.3 percent in October 2018.
