26/11/2014,

Sri Lanka will import 50,000 tonnes of rice from Bangladesh with immediate effect with the aim to control the escalating price of rice, the staple food in the country, in the past months. Following a sharply reduced 2014 production, rice prices are at record levels, with a kilogramme of rice sold at between 80-100 Sri Lanka Rupee (LKR) in the open market. The stocks will be available at all Sathosa outlets of the country at reduced prices ranging from LKR 50 (USD 0.42) per Kg of white rice to LKR 60 (USD 0.46 ) per Kg of Samba rice, lower than the subsidized prices in September.
