Mexico: Restoration of import tariff on Paddy and Rice from January 9th 2015.

07/01/2015,

Mexico will reinstate its import tariffs on paddy and rice from January 9th 2015 in order to promote production, processing and marketing of domestic rice and thus strengthen the competiveness of its rice industry. The country will adopt a 9 percent tariff on imported paddy rice, and a 20 percent tariff on husked, long grain and other imported rice from all the countries which are not involved in Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with Mexico. The Government had discontinued tariffs on paddy and rice imports in 2008 to reduce rice prices on the country. However, the decision to restore tariffs have been taken as Mexico’s paddy rice production declined about 50 percent while domestic consumption increased about 12 percent.
