Pakistan: Government imposes a 25 percent regulatory duty on wheat imports

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Government of Pakistan lifted the ban on the import of wheat and wheat products and instead imposed a 25 percent regulatory duty on the 19th of March 2015. This measure is designed to protect local farmers from declining wheat prices. The ECC has been supporting the domestic wheat market by granting a 1 month extension on the export of 1.2 million tonnes of wheat in Punjab and Singh provinces making the new cut-off date April 30th and May 15th respectively. It has arranged the procuring of 6.6 million tonnes of Wheat by four provinces and the Pakistan agriculture storage and supply corporation thus aiding the settling of previous debts in the respective provinces. The ECC has also consented in the provision of an additional 40 000 metric tonnes of wheat to the World Food Programme for the intervention of temporary displaced persons of North Waziristan Agency and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
