Bolivia removes the subsidy on bread flour

05/06/2015,

In mid-May 2015, the Bolivian Government removed the subsidy on wheat flour. The subsidy had been in place for 4 years with the aim to stabilize the price of basic bread (pan de batalla) at Bs 0.40 (currently 0.06 USD). Bolivia normally imports close to two-thirds of its wheat consumption and low regional availabilities, coupled with low domestic production in the past few years, put pressure on flour prices and consequently those of bread. With a strong recovery in production both at the national and regional level, particularly in Argentina the country’s main source of imports, and sufficient availabilities in the local market, prices of wheat and wheat flour have declined in the past two years from their record levels of 2013, justifying the removal of the subsidy according to the Government.
