Thailand to sell nearly 6 million tonnes of sub-quality and rotten rice

Following the recent sale of 1.148 million tonnes in early July, the Government of Thailand plans to sell about 5.89 million tonnes of sub-quality and rotten rice by the end of July before the new crop enters the stockpile. The amount to be sold will consist of 4.6 million tonnes of rice that is unfit for consuming, this batch will be sold to ethanol manufacturers; additionally, it will include 1.29 million tonnes of rotten rice which will be sold to biomass power plants. The measure aims on releasing these stocks in order to save on storage costs as well as to prevent the arriving stocks from contamination by the sub-quality and rotten rice.
