On 1 February, the Government of Sri Lanka raised the import duty on rice by 43 percent from LKR 35 per kilogram (USD 234 per tonnes) to LKR 50 per kilogram (USD 341 per tonne). The measure aims to encourage consumption of the ample domestic availabilities, following the 2015 record production and relatively high imports last year and thus protect local farmers from low prices.
