Liberia extends suspension of tariffs on rice imports

02/09/2016,

The Government has issued the Executive Order No. 80; effective as of August 25, which extends Executive Order No. 70 of June 2015 on the suspension of the import tariff on semi/wholly milled and broken rice. Tariff suspensions have been recurrent in the past few years, with the first one approved in March 2008 (Executive Order No. 11). The Government is committed to keep prices of selected basic commodities in check and this measure in particular aims to curb prices of rice, the country’s main staple food. Liberia depends heavily on food imports to meet its consumption requirements and imports more than half of its rice consumption needs in a normal year.
