Egypt cancels its zero-tolerance ergot policy on wheat

23/09/2016,

Egypt, the world's largest buyer of wheat, lifted the import ban on wheat containing ergot, a common grain fungus, on 21 September, and returned to the international standard of allowing up to 0.05 percent of ergot content. The zero-tolerance ban was first implemented in December 2015 but subsequently lifted during June, then re-instated on 22 August. However, the Government has since reconsidered and reverted to the international tolerance level following limited response to the latest tenders from traders unable to guarantee zero ergot content.
