Tariffs on imports of staple foods waived in Rwanda

13/06/2017,

The East African Community (EAC) has removed or reduced the Common External Tariff (CET) on some imported food products for Rwanda, in an effort to ease supply pressure and curb food inflation. According to the EAC Customs Union protocol, goods imported from outside the region are subject to tariffs. However, under the recently-introduced measure, the 35 percent duty on wheat grain imports will be removed, while the duty on imported sugar will drop from 100 percent to 25 percent and the tariff rate on imported rice from 75 percent to 45 percent. The waiver is subject to the condition that Rwanda will not export these commodities to the other EAC countries.
