Global Record at national PSMA Capacity Needs Assessment
The Global Record Coordinator participated in the national PSMA workshop, held in South Africa, 27 February – 3 March 2017, which took place to formulate a national strategy and action plan for compliance with the 2009 FAO Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (PSMA).
This workshop was one of the first Needs Assessment workshops held by FAO to identify a national roadmap for the implementation of the PSMA, following a series of regional capacity development workshops to support its implementation.
The Global Record Coordinator participated in the workshop and highlighted the role of the Global Record Information System as a supporting tool for the implementation of the PSMA.
This includes in the provision of relevant, certified and up-to-date information to the control authorities on foreign vessels involved in fishing and fishing-related activities and their operations, to verify and validate the information submitted in the advance request of port entry, to support risk analysis and to identify IUU fishing activities.
