Training on Digital Soil Mapping and Modelling

Soil information and data and the generation of soil property maps play a crucial role in informed decision-making

The workshop will be organized under the framework of the South South Assistance Fund (SSCAF) project 'Capacity development on sustainable soil management - Africa': UGANDA financed by the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchange (CICETE), Ministry of Commerce, the People’s Republic of China. The objective of the project is to enhance capacity development on Sustainable Soil Management (SSM) in  Uganda through South-South cooperation with a special focus on balanced fertilization.

Soil information and data and the generation of soil property maps play a crucial role in optimizing the use of fertilizers to scale up the sustainable management of soils.  For this purpose, through its extensive capacity building program, the GSP is bridging global technical divides on digital soil mapping, the use of open-source GIS software and modeling soil carbon sequestration potential.

With the world slowly opening after the covid-19 pandemic, the GSP with Uganda FAO Office organized an in-person 5-day workshop at the College of Computing and Information Sciences of the Makerere University in Kampala (Uganda) on June 13-17, 2022, on digital soil mapping.

The workshop, condicted by Ms Luotto will have the following objectives.

Build capacity on:

  • mapping soil properties using digital soil mapping;
  • soil data cleaning and processing;
  • map uncertainty estimation and validation;
  • data visualization and delivery.
