Производство продовольствия начинается с почв. В отсутствие здоровых почв выращивать питательные пищевые продукты было бы практически невозможно. Такие проблемы, как эрозия почвы, могут приводить к сокращению размеров урожая почти на 50 процентов, что негативно сказывается на средствах к существованию фермеров, а также на состоянии окружающей среды, сельского хозяйства и пищевой продукции. Здоровье почв – вопрос, который касается каждого из нас.

Фермеры по всему миру сталкиваются с различными проблемами. В их числе – неправильное использование удобрений и пестицидов, а также недостаточные знания о почвенных условиях.

A five-day mission in Honduras was carried out as part of a comprehensive initiative focused on improving soil analysis capabilities and implementing soil sampling strategies and fieldwork campaigns. The project involved the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), the Catholic Relief Services (CRS), and the Dirección de Ciencia y Tecnología Agropecuaria - Secretaría de Agricultura y Ganadería (DICTA-SAG). Its primary objective ws standardize methodologies for soil sampling, ensuring the generation of reliable data crucial for agricultural and environmental applications. This mission was a component of the SoilFER project (Soil mapping for resilient agrifood systems), a unique framework designed to unlock valuable insights on soils to inform policymaking and fertilizer recommendations, both at the national and field scale.

Representatives from approximately 60 soil laboratories across 23 different countries attended the Latin American Soil Laboratory Network (LATSOLAN). The gathering kicked off in Santiago de Chile on 8 April and continued with sessions in Chillán from 9 to 11 April. The workshop entitled “Pathways to precision in soil analysis: advancing soil laboratories in Latin America and the Caribbean” aimed to advance soil analysis in the region through collaborative efforts between LATSOLAN members.

The Recarbonization of Global Agricultural Soils, known as the RECSOIL initiative, driven by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and its the Global Soil Partnership (GSP), continues to make significant strides in its mission to recarbonize soils, with Costa Rica leading the way as a pioneer in its implementation. RECSOIL Costa Rica involves key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Costa Rica (MAG), the National Forestry Financing Fund (FONAFIFO Costa Rica, for its acronym in Spanish), the National Institute for Innovation and Transfer of Agricultural Technology (INTA, for its acronym in Spanish), the Costa Rican Coffee Institute (ICAFE), the Dos Pinos producers' cooperative, the University of Costa Rica, and the Costa Rican Soil Science Association.
