16/07/2022

The President of the 76th General Assembly of the United Nations, Abdulla Shahid, visited an FAO-led project focused on climate change adaptation in Petén as part of his visit to Guatemala.

During his visit, he learned about the intervention model of the Association of Forestry Communities of Petén (ACOFOP), which implements sustainable actions for the production of wood, xate and Ramón seed with associations, families and agroforestry producers in this department.

These actions allow women associations to generate economic income through the added value of ramón seed and the international marketing of xate as an ornamental plant. Agroforestry producers also generate income through the sustainable production of high-value timber and its processing for local and international markets.

The event was attended by authorities from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ACOFOP, FAO, the Government of Petén, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the United Nations System in Guatemala, as well as producers, partners, and beneficiaries of the project.

The project is implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in the north of the country, in support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food, and the National Forestry Institute with funds KOICA.
