THE PROPOSAL

The Hand-in-Hand initiative is working with the government of the Togolese Republic to support their 2025 strategic vision of making agriculture a real engine of economic growth and job creation. Under this framework, efforts are being directed towards three main commodities, covering the totality of the national territory, and benefiting more than 100,000 small scale producers.

COMMODITIES AND INTERVENTIONS

Sesame

The sesame oil sector is emerging in the country to meet a growing demand. With high opportunities for employment and income increase to small producers, investments are being focused along several stages of the value chain in the Savanah and Kara regions. Interventions around production include seed multiplication, improvement in productivity and efficiency of primary production, and development of cultivated land. 

Regarding processing, interventions are related to acquiring mechanised equipment, improving the stocking and processing capacity, and providing e-extension and advisory services. In order to develop this value chain, the technical and organizational capabilities of all value chain actors will be strengthened. 

With an investment of 40 million USD, more than 30,000 smallholders will be benefited, and more than 60,000 direct jobs will be created. The IRR is 21%.

Cassava

With a significant increase in production over the last years, cassava is being targeted for investments to increase productivity, and development of by-products such as flour, gari, starch and pods. Therefore, interventions are being targeted in the Plateaux and Maritime regions around production and processing.

Investments intend to support the production of improved certified cuttings with a solar irrigation system, develop 400,000 hectares of cultivated land, and provide production equipment such as tractors and planters. 

For cassava transformation, investments are focused on acquisition of semi-industrial and artisanal processing equipment, and strengthening the mechanical and organizational capacities of actors.

With an investment of around 50 million USD, more than 40,000 farmers will be benefited, and more than 80,000 direct jobs will be created. The IRR is 20%.

Cashew

In the past six years (2016 to 2022), cashew production has increased from 16,000 tonnes to 33,866 tonnes, representing an increase of 112%. With a production that is rapidly expanding, opportunities for processing and transformation arise, prioritizing investments in the Central region. 

Interventions around production target supporting the rejuvenation of more than 5,000 ha of aging plantations, while supporting the installation of 10,000 ha of plantation. In addition, interventions include supporting the installation of new timber yards, and promotion of sustainable practices and environmental protection. To increase processing capacity, investments are focused on the strengthening of processing units, as well as the technical and organizational capacities of value chain actors. 

With an investment of around 30 million USD, more than 35,000 of producers will be benefited, and more than 70,000 direct jobs will be created. The IRR is 19%.
