Introduction to Illegal Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing

Duration:

The study of the contents of this course requires a total time commitment of approximately 15 hours, divided into recommended daily sessions of 2 hours each, which may vary depending on additional readings and research.

Course methodology:

This course is developed through self-learning, being the participant's responsibility to build their own knowledge.

The methodology considers the systematic application of different learning tools and self-assessment exercises per unit, which will facilitate the understanding of the contents. Reviewing the contents of this course requires a dedication of approximately 15 chronological hours, which may vary depending on the references you want to review, and it is advisable to hold sessions of one hour three times a week.

Start of the course:

The course will be available from November 17, 2021.

Goal:

To provide an overview of illegal unreported and unregulated (‘IUU’) fishing, including the definition, global impact and scale of IUU fishing, how international instruments seek to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing; and, the practice of regional organizations to combat IUU fishing.

Course objectives:

• The meaning of the term IUU fishing
• Causes, impact and scale of IUU fishing
• How international instruments seek to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing
• The practice of regional organizations to combat IUU fishing

Contents:

• What is IUU fishing?
• Why understanding IUU fishing is important
• International policy and legal framework to combat IUU fishing
• Regional efforts to combat IUU fishing

Approval Requirements:

To pass the course, a final evaluation consisting of a summative questionnaire of 20 questions covering the course contents must be carried out, with unlimited attempts. The minimum percentage of achievement for approval will be 70% in the sum of the best evaluation obtained in the attempts.

Hardware requirements:

For the correct completion of the course, the participant must have the following minimum technical specifications:

• PC with internet connection.
• The quality and speed of browsing and downloading documents will depend exclusively on the connection bandwidth.
• RAM memory greater than 1GB
• Free hard disk space: 52 MBytes.
• 600 MHz or higher processor.

Software requirements:

• Latest version of Google Chrome web browser, Mozilla Firefox, Safari or Opera, with JavaScript activate
• Screen resolution of at least 1024x768 pixels (width by height).
• PDF document reader.

Additional requirements:

• Knowledge of office automation (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), fluent email management and Internet browsing.
• Availability of at least 8 to 10 hours per week for reading and carrying out activities. The course schedule is at the participant's choice. You can enter the classroom at the time you want. You should only consider entering, at least three times a week for readings and activities.
