Who offers the course:
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut.

Avian influenza is a major transboundary animal disease with far-reaching impacts on the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and poultry farmers, as well as on regional and international trade, food safety, public health and international travel and tourism.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, delivers this online training course on avian influenza preparedness that includes feedback from the pilot course.

The course combines convenient self-paced study with a unique opportunity for discussion and networking with international and national experts.

Total length:

The course is studied entirely online and takes about 12 to 14 hours to complete. It will be open for four weeks.

Course modality and methodology:

It begins with a live interactive webinar, where learners meet their trainers and are introduced to the course. Participants then progress through eight interactive modules, enriched with photos, exercises and self-assessment questions.

During the course, trainers and international experts will be available via a discussion forum to answer questions and lead discussions.

Towards the end of the course, there will be a second live interactive webinar to discuss in more detail the issues raised during the course.

All participants are required to take a comprehensive assessment and complete all course work. Participants who pass the course will receive a certificate.

It is essential that participants have time each week for the development of learning activities. It is estimated that the time required for learning will range from one to two hours per week.

Beginning and end of the course:

from April 25, 2023 to May 28, 2023. Each week there are two interactive online modules. In addition, there is a discussion forum. The course starts and ends with a webinar and there is a final evaluation and pre- and post-course feedback surveys.

Target audience:

The primary audiences for the course are official and private veterinarians directly involved in avian influenza surveillance, detection, prevention and response.

Overall objective:

The overall objective of the course is to strengthen country capacity for early warning, risk reduction and management of avian influenza outbreaks by building knowledge and skills for detection, prevention and response to avian influenza outbreaks among technical and veterinary field specialists.

  • Week two: Clinical and laboratory diagnosis.
  • Week three: Prevention and Surveillance.
  • Week four: Outbreak Investigation, Response and Control.

Evaluation and passing requirements:

In order to pass the course, the readings and activities corresponding to each unit and a final evaluation at the conclusion of the entire learning process must be completed.

The general evaluation will be carried out according to the following percentage scale:

  • Outstanding: 90 to 100 points
  • Remarkable: 80 to 89 points
  • Pass: 60 to 79 points
  • Failed: 0 to 59 points
Hardware requirements:

The equipment on which the participant takes the course must have the following minimum technical specifications for its correct completion:

  • Computer or electronic device with internet connection.
  • The quality and speed of navigation and downloading of documents will depend exclusively on the bandwidth of the connection.
  • RAM memory greater than 1GB.
  • Free space in hard disk, superior to: 500 MB.
  • Processor of 600 MHz or higher.
Software Requirements:
  • The latest version of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari or Opera web browser, with JavaScript enabled.
  • Screen resolution of at least 1024x768 pixels (width by height).
  • PDF document reader.
Additional Requirements:
  • Office automation skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), fluent email and web browsing.
