Coastal Fisheries Initiative

Global Partnership

The Coastal Fisheries Initiative (CFI) is a true global partnership, bringing together UN agencies and international conservation organizations at the forefront of efforts to improve coastal fisheries management and conserve marine biodiversity.

Overall coordination is the responsibility of FAO in collaboration with its partners Conservation International, the UN Development Programme, the UN Environment Programme, the World Bank and WWF.

With a total budget of nearly USD 15 million over five years, FAO has put in place a common platform to share experiences and lessons learned in coastal fisheries management.

By pulling together best practices, CFI aims to develop more holistic processes and integrated approaches to coastal fisheries management meant to inform governance and value chain development.

At the same time, FAO supports the development of a Fisheries Performance Assessment Toolkit (FPAT), which will enable to monitor the sustainability of coastal fisheries and their environmental, social and economic benefits.
