First Tuna project steering committee highlights the importance of knowledge sharing and partnership

Uniting and collaborating for a sustainable future of tuna fisheries

Rome--Common Ocean Program Tuna project steering committee recently convened in Rome, Italy, marking a crucial project milestone in the pursuit of sustainable tuna fisheries. Participants from various organizations and institutions gathered at the FAO headquarters for productive discussions and knowledge sharing.

The meeting highlighted the progress of the Tuna project. Executing partners shared their planned work, showcasing the project's advancements. The discussions also covered thematic areas, including the ecosystem approach to fisheries management, harmonized indicators, electronic reporting standards, compliance training, and joint tuna Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (t-RFMOs) working groups.

Knowledge management and communication, monitoring and evaluation, and gender mainstreaming were among key areas addressed during the meeting.  Other important discussions explored cooperation with other projects under the Common Oceans Program and collaboration with FAO activities and international initiatives. 

As the Tuna project progresses, the Project steering committee will guide and ensure that the project plays a vital role in safeguarding tuna populations and securing the livelihoods of communities dependent on them. The Tuna project is part of the Common Oceans Program funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) that has galvanised international action in support of sustainable management and biodiversity conservation of the ABNJ.

About the Common Oceans Tuna project 

The Common Oceans Tuna project brings together a global partnership dedicated to sustainable tuna fisheries aiming to advance responsible tuna fisheries management and biodiversity conservation in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ). Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and led by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), it works in collaboration with five regional tuna fisheries management organizations, intergovernmental organizations, the private sector, and civil society.
