Smallholder farmers in the Lao People‟s Democratic Republic, or Laos, are experiencing great change which brings opportunities but also challenges. Agribusiness can enhance livelihoods, improve well-being, and a strengthen resilience of local communities and the nation. However, agribusiness has not always gone well for farmers. Farmers experience of success in agribusiness may help overcome problems elsewhere. In 2011 field research examined 12 cases for issues and success factors. The context of policy, agencies and trade was also analyzed. Findings were published in a study report “Smallholder production agreements in the Lao PDR: qualifying success” which is summarized in this briefing.
